Our houseboat stay on the backwaters of Kerala was one of our most memorable experiences from the South of India. Relaxing on board with nothing to do apart from people watching, fishing, eating and relaxing!
With a Captain, Chef and helpers on board, you do not have to worry about anything.
We stayed for 2 nights as the check in time is 12pm and check out is 9am so 1 night just isn’t enough to really relax.
You can book your houseboat stay fairly easily online using a web search or on the usual channels like booking.com. But our advice is to go directly to the boats and check them out before you book. All boats start and return to ‘Finishing Point’. If you want the largest selection of boats, get there for 9.30am and browse, literally check out the boats inside, make sure they are clean and go with a check list. We got there at 1pm after all the boats that were booked had left, so there were not as many boats around but still enough to find what we wanted and in fact, more bargaining power!
Check the following:
- What time AC comes on
- Are the fans powerful enough (check)
- Do the sockets work
- Bed sheets and towels included
- What meals are included
- Are snacks, afternoon tea and soft drinks/beer included
- Is it a private boat or shared
- Where will the boat take you
- Where will they park the boat overnight
We hope our video and blog help you to enjoy a houseboat trip. Although it is a touristy thing to do, we highly recommend this peaceful trip. Message us if you have any questions.
